“Prevention is better than cure”. This famous proverb is applicable for our skin care as well. Besides having good range of products, there are certain things you need to take care of. Healthy lifestyle ensures good skin and delayed aging process. For a healthy skin, there are certain dos and don’ts which are shared below.
1. Protect yourself from the sun
Sun light contains UV rays that deeply penetrates the skin, damages it and even causes skin cancer. Excessive exposure to sunlight causes wrinkles, sun burn, freckles and open pores. Try to avoid sunlight as much as possible by staying indoor during noon (UV rays are at its peak), wear clothes that cover the skin properly and carry umbrella during daytime.
For UV protection:
- Use a sunscreen with SPF 15. Apply it 15-20 minutes before moving out during day time. Reapply it after every two hours or as per your perspiration rate. The more you perspire the often you repeat the process. Applying it before swimming can also cause less damage to skin because most of the pools contain chemicals that are damaging to skin.
- Avoid exposure to sunlight during noon or more exactly between 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Sun rays are strongest during this time.
- Consider laundry additives, a chemical known for protecting the clothes and body against UV rays and lasts for few washes.
- Cover your body with loosely stitched clothes, long sleeves, long pants and wide-brimmed hats.
2. Don’t smoke
Smoking depletes the skin of oxygen, by constricting the veins and tiny blood vessels in our body, which boosts the aging process. In addition, it also makes fine lines and wrinkles to appear visibly and makes your lips appear darker.
While Smoking, you need to purse your lips quite frequently; this damages the collagen and elastin in your skin, compounds responsible for skin rejuvenation and elasticity.
Smoking is injurious for your health and your loved ones. So, aim to quit it as soon as possible or if you find it hard, consult doctor for a treatment.
3. Treat your skin gently
Long use of makeup and skin products can damage the skin. To keep it gentle:
Limit bath time
Your body loves hot water, but long stay in hot water opens the pores, removes the oils from your skin. Try to reduce your shower time and use warm water instead of hot.
Avoid strong soaps
Strong soaps and detergents contain chemicals that damage the skin, remove the moisture and causes itching. Use mild or cream based soaps especially during winters.
Apply shaving gel or cream before shaving. If you are out of shaving gel, use hair conditioner instead. It will make your hair soft and smoother. Always shave in the direction of hair growth.
Rubbing towel on skin causes rashes and itching. To avoid damage pat dry your skin after taking shower or washing your face.
Moisturize dry skin
Moisturize your skin no matter what your skin type is. For oily skin use gel based moisturizer, for dry skin use cream based moisturizer and if you have a mixed sort of skin then apply gel moisturizer to your T-zone and cream moisture to rest of the face.
4. Eat a healthy diet
Processed or refined foods are not good for your body and skin; they can cause obesity and contains fewer nutrients than your daily requirement. Try to add plenty of water, fruits and vegetables in your daily diet plan. Research proves that a considerable amount of vitamin C in your diet cures acne and promotes healthy skin.
5. Manage stress
No matter how healthy your diet is, if you can’t control your stress, you will soon have fine lines and breakouts throughout your face. Try to manage stress and control your mood swings. Yoga and meditation are natural way to relieve stress. Do exercise regularly and take a proper sleep, and make a schedule for work, leisure and rest. Healthy state of mind is a way towards a healthy skin.
